Walking The Golf Course – Golf Tips

When I was just 30 years old and playing golf, I almost always walked the golf course. Then one summer I noticed that I would be getting very tired and out of breath after 13 or 14 holes of walking the course. I always thought that walking the golf course was most of the fun of playing a round of golf. This was a wake up call that I needed to be more physically fit and in shape to enjoy playing golf.

Being tired and out of breath on the golf course motivated me to become more physically active and to spend several days a week working out throughout the year. I have been able to keep up this routine throughout my life and so I have not had to be tired and out of breath on the golf course even to this day.

In order to be able to walk the golf course, I found several tips that were able to help me be in shape even with a minimal amount of ongoing exercise. Here are a few golf tips for this:

1- Do a minimum of three times a week of good cardiovascular workout for 15 minutes each.

2- Practice using a weighted club as a regular routine for golf strength training.

3- Always walk the course whenever you can. Even if you have to use an electric cart on the course. Let the other person drive and just use the cart to hold the clubs and walk the course.

4- Walk in the shade of the trees when possible on hot summer days, but keep your shots in the middle of the fairway.

5- Do not allow yourself to become overweight. It will interfere with your best swing.

Remember these golf tips so you can be physically healthy and improve your golf score.

Stay in shape and walk the course, you will enjoy it more as the professionals do.

Arnold Palmer The Man Beyond The Golf Course

To most, Arnold Palmer is best known as the legendary golfer who dominated the golf course for many years. To others, he is a successful business executive, sportsman, aviator and spokesman. To his family, he is a dedicated and devoted man with a loving heart. Above all, it is his personality and down-to-earth demeanor that has made him one of the most popular and accessible notables in history.

Arnold Palmer?s golfing success came about in a way that few others will ever experience themselves. During the 1960s, he was named as ?Athlete of the Decade? by the Associated Press. After racking up 92 championships in professional competition, 62 of which were won on the U.S. PGA Tour, Arnold Palmer quickly became a household name.

During his time away from the tee, Arnold Palmer developed a keen business sense and developed a variety of interests in various fields. Among them, Arnold Palmer Enterprises, which is a multi-division structure that handles his commercial business. In addition, Palmer has become involved in automobile and aviation service firms and remains the principal owner of a car dealership in his hometown of Latrobe, Pennsylvania. Since 1971, Palmer has been the sole owner and president of Latrobe Country Club.

Although his love for other business ventures occupies much of his time, Arnold Palmer signed on as a consultant to The Golf Channel, which first aired on cable networks in January 1995. Over the course of more than 40 years, this golfing great has given his approval on more than 200 new courses throughout the United States and the world. His business ventures and golfing participation keeps Palmer busy and on the move for most of the year. Luckily, he is a skilled aviator and often mans the controls himself onboard his Cessna Citation X jet aircraft, which he commonly uses for travel. After having dedicated so much to the world of aviation and his local community, the Arnold Palmer Regional Airport was named in his honor.

Speaking of contributions, Arnold Palmer has given much to the sport of golf and it?s fans. In turn, the sport has given back. In 2004, Palmer received the Presidential Medal of Freedom from George W. Bush during a White House ceremony. In addition, he is a charter member of the World Golf Hall of Fame and a member of the American Golf Hall of Fame. He is also a member of the PGA Hall of Fame, which is headquartered in the sunshine state of Florida.

During the 1980s, Palmer played a significant part in the fundraising activities that led to the creation of the Orlando-based Arnold Palmer Hospital for Children and Women. Today, Palmer divides his time between Pennsylvania, which he primarily enjoys during the warmer seasons, and California. For fans, Arnold Palmer is one of the most gracious sports figures in history. A willing autograph signer and a kind-hearted gentleman who always has the time to shake hands or pose for a photo, Arnold Palmer is a fan favorite both on and off the golf course.

Big Pro’s Toughest Challenge Wasn’t on the Golf Course

We?ve all been there. You wake up one day, feeling a little under the weather, but try to tough it out for a few days. When that doesn?t work, you go to the doctor to get medicine that will make all the problems go away. That?s what Carolinas PGA Professional Bob Boyd did this past February, when he thought that he was coming down with the flu. He went to the doctor to get an antibiotic because he wanted to be healthy for upcoming trips to Pebble Beach and then across the pond for the European Senior Tour season. ?I hadn?t been sick in thirty-five years,? Boyd said. After a physical and blood tests, Boyd was jolted to hear that he didn?t have the flu. ?Big Pro,? as his friends and fellow PGA Professionals called him, had cancer. Adult Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML) a cancer of the blood and bone marrow, to be exact. Oncologist Dr. Bill McNulty, a good friend of Bob?s confirmed the diagnosis. ?It was really a shock,? Boyd said. ?I really didn?t know what leukemia was. All I knew was that it wasn?t good.?

In the days that followed, Boyd spent hours researching the disease that was ravaging his body. ?I didn?t really spend a lot of time wondering, ?Why me??? Boyd reflected. ?All I wanted to do was learn about the disease and figure out what it was going to take to get rid of it.? He also read about rising Nationwide Tour player Jarrod Lyle, who was diagnosed with AML in 1999 when he was all of 17. Lyle was victorious in his fight against AML after enduring nine months of chemotherapy and being unable to pick up a golf club for eighteen months. Lyle is also currently in the top 20 on the Nationwide Tour money list.

The first step for Boyd was two rounds of chemotherapy at UNC-Memorial Hospital, where he spent 78 days with ?the most wonderful nurses and doctors in the Oncology and Hematology Unit.? The process was grueling and Big Pro lost sixty-two pounds during the chemotherapy treatments. ?I was so weak, I couldn?t do anything. I couldn?t even get out of bed,? the sixteen-time CPGA major tournament champion said. After a return home for six weeks, Boyd returned to UNC-Memorial for a bone marrow transplant in June. During his stay at the hospital, one of the few things Boyd could do is watch movies. In fact, he now could moonlight as a film critic. ?I obviously had a lot of time on my hands,? Boyd said with a laugh. ?During the bone marrow transplant I was confined to the room because the risk of infection was high and my immune system was so weak. I?d watch a movie, and it would knock out a couple hours of the day. Then I?d watch another one. Favorite movie of the summer? Boyd didn?t have one. ?Nothing sticks out in my head. I saw too many, really. A lot of bad chick flicks.?

Boyd, whose name dots the CPGA record book like golf balls on a driving range, also spent a great deal of time thinking about golf. ?It?s what I love, it?s what I?ve done since seventh grade, and it?s what makes me happy,? Boyd said. Upon learning from doctors that his best case scenario was a seven month recovery period, Boyd checked the calendar. He saw the CPGA Section Championship in October. ?That became my motivation. I set my goal as playing in the CPGA Section Championship,? said Boyd, who has won the tournament four times in his career. ?That?s what I thought about all summer. If I worked hard enough that I could be back on the golf course and strong enough to play in the CPGA Section Championship.?

Big Pro cites the support of his family and friends as helping him the most in his battle against AML. ?My wife stayed with me the whole time and my son was always at my side,? Boyd said. ?I couldn?t have gotten through it without them.? He was also very grateful for the support and prayers of his friends. ?It would have been easy to fall into depression during chemotherapy and while I was bedridden for months,? Boyd admitted. ?But my friends and family were always there for me. Thanks to their love and support, I was convinced that I would beat cancer. Boyd has drawn much from the past year and his battle with leukemia. ?I appreciate how vulnerable we all are,? Boyd said. ?I don?t take life for granted like I used to because now I know firsthand that we are not guaranteed anything in life.?

Big Pro returned home to Wilmington in mid-September after a bone marrow transplant that was ninety-eight percent successful and with a blood cell count slowly returning to normal levels. His medical checkups have gone very well so far and he has made his way back to the golf course. Now, the task at hand for Big Pro is to reverse the muscle atrophy he obtained from spending 120 days in a hospital bed. ?I have a lot of work to do to build my strength back up,? Boyd said. ?I haven?t played competitive golf in seven and a half months and I?ve gone from hitting drives 285 yards to about 215 yards. My legs feel like they are in buckets of cement.?

Simply happy to be alive, Big Pro has no thoughts of finishing on the top of the leaderboard in the upcoming CPGA Section Championship. ?I?m ecstatic to have the chance to fulfill my goal and to see all my friends in the CPGA Section,? Boyd said. ?I just want to enjoy myself?although, I must admit, that I would love to break 80 and make the cut.?

No matter what Bob ?Big Pro? Boyd shoots at the CPGA Section Championship, he is already a champion. Bob Boyd?s battle serves as an inspiration to all athletes who must face hardship, and as a reminder that true achievement is measured not by athletic success, but by the individual?s effort. Boyd has had great success on the golf course, but his inspirational efforts far exceed that success. Big Pro?s triumphant victory against leukemia shows the great potential we all have for overcoming hurdles in life.

A Quick Course For The Golf Course: Does & Don’ts

Many people feel that all it takes is a few golf lessons and then suddenly upon completion they are experts. They are Tiger Woods in the making…so they feel. Before you begin, see if you can shadow someone at a golf club for free. Shadowing someone with more experience in the game will help your game. Just like in any sport, for example, foot ball, it would be ridiculous for a foot ball fan to where a tuxedo or his/her pajamas to a game.

-Wearing improper or uncomfortable gear on the golf course. Improper gear such as, tee shirts with word phrases or sayings that have nothing to do with golf such as: ‘I’ve been married to my ball and chain for 20 years….HELP!’ should not be worn on the course. When in doubt…stick to plain golf shirts with neutral shades such as white, beige, red, black purple and grey.

Another big no-no is wearing a shirt and tie with slacks and your everyday office shoes is in appropriate gear and should be saved for your next corporate meeting, not a golf game.

-Good manners are not just for the dinning room table or your favorite restaurant.’ Before your first day on the course, make sure that you eat healthy. Save the chili hotdogs for the Super Bowl. Stay away from foods that cause gas and other ailments.

Make sure that you do not skip your meals. It would be tragic if you fainted and had to be carried to the hospital in a stretcher.

Golf is a very quite yet intense game. Leave the following things at home: Your 1980’s radio box. Many people feel that every sport should include music, including their golf game. Save the music boxes for your next family reunion but

-If you are a pet lover leave your pets at home. Pets are not permitted on the golf course…it is not cute.

-Yelling and obnoxious talking is not permitted. Leave the talking for after the game. Whistling and singing are very poor etiquette.

-The ultimate don’t is forgetting to place your cell phone on vibrate. The major don’t is answering and making unnecessary phone calls while your opponent is putting.

-Practice truly does make perfection, especially during a golf game. Don’t act as if you know everything there is to know about golf. If you do, you must have something to back it up like playing a good game.

Golf Course Management: A Career Choice Loaded With Opportunity

Golf’s rising popularity, fame and fortune has propelled the sport into something of magnitude, but without good golf courses and top quality complexes, players would be left putting on Astroturf. Professionals, such as Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson, have created a following of fans and many people look to follow in their footsteps, as with any star in any type of occupation. This increase in popularity and playing activity means that the golfing industry has to respond.

Golf course management has become an important and integral part of making sure that professional players continue to promote the sport. Golf complexes also provide many career opportunities to other people and they offer a varied selection of jobs for anyone to explore. Club pros, greens keepers, physiotherapists, photographers and writers enjoy plenty of exposure and a good, solid career thanks to golf courses and complexes. But all these spin off job markets rely on one very important occupation: golf course management.

Running a golf course is similar to any industry. There’s a certain amount of experience, training and know how required to have an effective facility that keeps members satisfied for continued patronage and encourages people to break into the sport of golf. While not every person is determined to have a PGA career, huge numbers of those hooked on the game of golf provide sales to facilities and jobs for the golfing industry. In the UK alone, four million people are involved in golfing and the popularity of the game in North America is even greater.

At this point, you may be asking yourself why you should look into golf course management as a career. The reasons are fairly simple. Top quality complexes need skilled employees to manage and oversee the well oiled functioning of their facilities. There’s an enormous amount of money involved in the golfing industry and complexes need to maintain the current standards that keep players coming back and provide exciting, new challenges to golfers. New greens are continually cropping up as experienced trainers learn the tricks and traps of courses and each facility needs to be better than the last, as well as providing stiff competition to other complexes. Competition, after all, only forces each facility to improve upon what already exists and increase the quality of what they offer to players.

Academies and colleges offer degrees in golf course management, so even someone who’s just getting into golfing can learn the ins and outs of running a complex. Most academies will offer training with emphasis on operations and management, and usually within two years, you’ll have a degree certifying your skills that makes you an attractive asset to any facility. A wide variety of courses within programs allow students to specialize in one area of the golfing industry or another, whether it is as golf pro or the general running of a complex. Programs are usually a blend of practical and classroom training, involving learning the in depth points of golfing as well as the business aspects of the industry.

Training in golf course management is provided by instructors that are usually PGA golf pros themselves, and the operational side of learning is provided by strong business leaders that will teach you the effective running of a golf complex, from the food industry to turf management. Human resources, sales and coaching are also integral parts of learning to work inside the golfing industry, which leaves you with a well rounded professional training and set of skills useful in any company or business. Many academies also provide extra training and coaching for those players who show the talent and ability to become PGA professional golfers themselves.

With a degree in golf course management, you’ll be able to provide services and facilities to not only the amateur golfer or weekend players but also the PGA pros. Every client is important to the longevity of the golfing industry and each situation you’ll face will only increase your personal value in the job market. Finding an academy or college that will provide you with the certification and skills you need is fairly easy, as even educational institutions themselves have noticed the increasing demand and responded with ample programs and varied courses to help you reach your occupational goals.
