Hot Golf Course Picks

Picking the right course can help you get the most out of your golf game, and much of it depends on your skill and what you are looking for.

Beginning golfers should avoid the top name golf courses, as they are not only expensive but the speed of a beginning golf game tends to be much slower, and advanced golfers at holes behind will be kept waiting. It also will be an uncomfortable environment for a new golfer to be surrounded by higher-level players.

Many courses have a variety of levels; for instance the first nine holes may be easier while holes further beyond present more significant challenge. If you are an intermediate player, this can be the best option, with a mix of simple and difficult. If your party has a mixed amount of skill, an intermediate course may also be the best option. A middle of the road course may offer the best option; the less skilled players can handle the course, while more skilled players can still enjoy the game.

Some courses also have a reputation for a more lighthearted game versus a serious professional course. Look at what you?re seeking in a game Opt for a course that is of a lesser intensity if you are with family and friends. If you?re a serious golfer looking more to improve your game and less for the social aspect, opt for a course where you know similar players will be.

Elevation and terrain are also things to be considered for choosing a course. If there is higher elevation and hillier terrain, it may be more difficult for a golfer looking to walk the course. If you don?t mind using a cart, then differing terrain may not be a problem.

If you?re a fair weather player, consider your location as well. Is there a good amount of rainfall? You don?t want to be stuck in the middle of the course during a downpour. California and Florida courses, among others, are perfect golf environments with a good mixture of warmth and sun. Unpredictable weather can easily ruin a day of golf, so consider before going.

Consider the miscellaneous options for a golf course too. Do they have enough golf carts? Can they handle the amount of clientele they have? Do they have a pro shop and services? These can make or break a golfing experience.

Property Prices Soar As New Championship Golf Course Development In Messinia Gets Under Way

The first phase of the long awaited for championship golf courses in Messinia, Greece is now under way. Construction work on the 18 hole state of the art luxury golf course at Romanos was started in September 2006, by The Tourism Enterprise of Messinia (TEMES). Troon Golf, the world’s leading high-end golf development, marketing and management company will be managing both the championship and standard courses. The golf courses themselves are being designed by Robert Trent-Jones II Inc the Californian based Golf Course Architects.

The opening of the course at Romanos will be in spring 2008 and is set to be a grand affair with many public personalities and it will also be televised. The construction of the second Phase at Pylos will commence in spring 2008 and the third phase at Rizomilo will begin in spring 2010. Achilles Constantakopoulos, the Managing Director of TEMES has stated that by 2015, Navarino will be Greece’s premier golf destination. There will be seven courses within half-an-hours drive of each other. In fact it will be the largest golf resorts in the whole of the Balkans and Mediterranean.

A large amount of land surrounding Romanos and Pylos has already been brought up by the ship owner who is developing the courses. A total of approximately 1.2 million m2 of land has been acquired from 1,300 individual holders of deeds. As a consequence it is becoming harder to find building plots and houses near the golf courses. Those that are left are commending very high prices.

In the passed year property prices near Romanos and Pylos have increased rapidly and the trend is set to accelerate still further. Government studies have shown that more than 200,000 visitors to Greece annually are potential golf tourists. It seems that many of these golfers are looking for property near the courses and are adding to the frenzy of property hunter that are now flocking to the area.

As property near the courses at Romanos and Pylos grows ever scarcer property hunters are being forced to search further a field than they anticipated. The areas that are benefiting most from increased interest are Methoni, Evagelismos and Finikounda.

The private sector investors have been buying large parcel of land in Messinia and have been building holiday rental units. It is estimated that over the next 3 year the seaside town of Finikounda alone will have accommodation for over 2000 tourists. Tourists will also benefit from a new Thalasso therapy centre (seawater treatments) that will soon be completed. Evagelismos a beautiful authentic Greek village which centres around its whitewashed church, cafes shaded by trees, a fountain and several shops creating a lively atmosphere. With its beautiful views across the surrounding countryside and of the islands that are scattered along the southern coast line has become a hotspot for people looking for property at affordable prices.

Currently it takes approximately 3.5 hours to drive to the new golf resorts from Athens, but this time will be reduce to under 3 hour when new road are in place. In accordance with the government’s guidelines for the ‘Good Road Plan’ a new motorway is under construction from Tropoli to Kalamata and is nearly completed. Another new major road is planned between Kalamata and Methoni further opening up the area. There is also talk of expanding Kalamata airport although nothing has been confirmed yet. However, demand for flights is already outstripping availability so it is only a matter of time before flights to Kalamata are increased.

Messinia is one of the most beautiful locations in the whole of Greece. This lesser know region is full of cultural history, important archaeological sites and is rich in colourful, traditional towns and villages. It has an abundance of outstanding natural beauty and some of the best beaches in the whole of Greece. It is hardly surprising, therefore, that Messinia has become an area of interest for golf enthusiasts and their families.

The Particulars Of Golf Course Management

A common dream for golfers is to be able to manage their own golf course. Imagine having the freedom of being surrounded by your favorite sport 365 days a year and also being in complete charge of an entire golf course. Sounds like an impossible dream doesn’t it? With the proper schooling and training you can make this dream your reality. Having knowledge about golf course management is a must.

Owning a golf course isn’t something that you should jump into without first considering all of the possible angles and difficulties that you may face along the way. Managing a golf course is quite a bit different than managing a convenience store. There are many things that you will need to become familiar with before going ahead with your decision. It is not solely a nice looking course with vibrant greens that makes a golf course successful. Everything from choosing the proper employees, to the layout of the golf course must be considered in excruciating detail.

Thankfully, there are ways to familiarize yourself with the topic of golf course management. A good starting point would be to take a general business management course. With this course you will learn how to manage the everyday aspects of a typical business, which will certainly come in handy later on if you are planning on moving on to golf course management. You will learn about the financial aspects of running your own business such as taxes, employee wages, renting a building as well as the day to day duties of any business owner. This could deal with employee management, how to ensure that your business goes up in value or even how to scout a location. All of these skills will be crucial to managing your course and need to be understood before taking the next step.

Once you are familiar with the prospect of managing your own business, you can start working on your plan to own and manage a golf course. You are of course first going to have to figure out the finances for this project and for this you will need to develop a business plan. A business plan simply outlines all of your plans and estimated costs of golf course management. This could include the location, the cost for upkeep of the grounds, cost of the pro shop, employee wages and the total cost of the property among many other things. In order to get a loan for this type of endeavor, you will need to prove to the bank that your idea will become profitable in the long run and that you will be able to repay your loan.

Once the financial portion is figured out, there are a variety of companies that you can hire who specialize in golf course management if you feel you need the help. They will send representatives to your location to help you with every aspect of setting up the golf course of your dreams. From the grass maintenance all the way to every last nickel and penny, a proper golf course management firm will definitely improve your chances of success.

Deciding to hire these types of firms depends on the scale of your golf course as well as how much you are already familiar about the industry. Therefore, if this in your first experience with golf course management, it would be advisable to hire one of these firms to help with the start up phase. Owning your own golf course can be a dream come true. With hard work, education and hiring experienced help when you need it, this can happen, and you’ll be on your way to living, working and playing in your own paradise.

Golf Swing Series: How to Choose The Correct Sand Iron To Master The Bunkers On Your Home Course

Bunker play is a necessary and often frightening aspect of a round of golf. On your usual golf course what are the bunkers like?

There are those with good fluffy sand that is quite deep and there are those with not so fluffy sand but still sand and those with almost hard pan just deep to a find sprinkling of sand.

On this last bunker type, the sand iron has a tendency to bounce off the hard surface and cause you to duff your shot. As already stated in a recent article, the object is to get out of the bunker and onto the green taking only one shot. One can not carry several sand irons to play each type of bunker, so the answer is to compromise.

The thing that makes a sand iron bounce to a greater or lesser degree when it makes contact with the sand is the width and the depth of the flange.

A sand iron with a wide and deep flange will bounce on contact with the sand. The ideal type for that deep fluffy sand because it will stay shallow and not knife under the ball as much.

Conversely, a narrow and shallow flange will not bounce as much and will dig into the sand and tend to stop. Certainly not what you want in fluffy sand but ideal for the hard pan type of bunker.

So, what do you do?

Firstly, you have to know what type of base most of the bunkers have on your home course. If the sand is all fluffy and deep, lucky you.

On my course, there are a lot of hard pan type bunkers.

Then, you go to your professional and ask him to order a sand iron with a medium depth and width of flange. This will be useful in all types of bunkers.

Don?t forget that the lob wedge is pretty useful out of a bunker. Practice is needed though to see how it will perform with various swings and ball positions.

Particularly useful for the buried or poached egg lie.

The drill is to hit down onto the edge of the poached egg (the sand ridge around the ball) and do not follow through. The ball should fly up in the air and out of the bunker. It will not be a very long shot however.

You may like the lob wedge for this, or your pitching wedge. The sand wedge may do too, but the flange could get in the way. As usual, practice and trial and error is the only way to tell.

However, the shot is played in the way described above.

Golf Courses

In the recent wake of golf course construction some projects became much more of concept art than having an underlying element of game challenge. Some are even more picturesque than testing or too stereotypical than unique. Yet others do offer fine elements of everything that became a standard of the ever revolutionizing concepts of golf courses.

Like the TPC at Sawgrass. Though really neat, picturesque and with a radical ?stadium? concept, the TPC at Sawgrass by architects Pete and Alice Dye is also the toughest golf course in the whole world. TPC at Sawgrass? concept of ?Target Golf? can earn worthy challenges by superb golfers, after all its being built to honor tournament players. Too bad, however, TPC at Sawgrass offers no room for mistake. These tournament players it supposed to honor are getting grinded and minced from the first tee on the fairways. These narrow fairways are lined with various hazards that catch even the slightest misplaced shot, and mounds that create too many obstructions, along with palm trees that even more obstruct sight and shot. The green isn?t as forgiving as well, so hardly compact that it doesn?t generate enough stopping action. All that until they reach the ?Island Green? or the 17th hole and wet their pants. TPC at Sawgrass did receive major renovations though, lessening the severity of the course. It?s still under reconstruction until late 2006. And for the expectant, of course the 17th hole stays.

Yet out of so much fluke, other golf architects do create withstanding golf courses when they dabble with concept art and challenge, such as what happen with the Pebble Beach Golf Links of Western United States. Actually part of the Pebble Beach Company that has three hotels and a spa, the Pebble Beach Golf Links is the reason by far why peoples go to this part of California. This course was designed originally by Jack Neville and Douglas Grant but it did a major facelift with Jack Nicklaus before it opened for the 1992 US Open. Pebble Beach Golf Links is regarded as many as being the most impressive golf course to be found in US. In fact it did appear several times in the Golf Digest America?s 100 Greatest Golf Courses and hitting the no.1 spot once in 2001. Pebble Beach did have an illustrious operation; it had hosted four occasions of US Open aside from several amateur golf tournaments and high profile championships.
